[Tarvek is finally beginning to get angry.  He's not a fast fury sort, and he's surprisingly peaceful given a chance, but he's got two dead friends laid out on his home-office sofa, and he's waiting to see if Mayfield has the grace to give them back now that it's had it's fun.  He's the sort of fellow who wants answers -- and he can't think of a better place to go than the DA...]

I'm still not sure Mayfield itself is evil, but I am past angry with how things work out here.  This shouldn't have led to a bloodbath.

What do people know about why folks here in Mayfield play along?  We've got groups like the DA, but what good is that if, as soon as the town goes crazy, half of us are going to go along with it?  Something...

Something a friend of mine said, just before she died in this last round makes me think she was afraid people she loved from home would be pulled to Mayfield if she didn't cooperate.  Did any of the rest of you get threats to people you love?

Well, I dunno that we can say it's not doing any good. I think a lot of us feel better having a way to know what's going on, and people we can trust that weren't necessarily the ones we had back home.

I...yeah, I got threats to people I care about, as well. Those people are here, so it seems like a valid concern. I'm worried about them. But I can almost guarantee none of them wants me to kill a person I hardly know, either. And they're not incapable of taking care of themselves.

But, Harry, here's the thing: we can't really protect them... and what we do...

Harry, blue-fire! If we don't act, Mayfield may hurt the people we love. But if everyone's been exactly right, then Mayfield will do that anyway. Mayfield can hurt them, drone them, kill them, and it will when it wants to, and we can't actually do a verdammt thing about that. We can't change it at all.

The only thing we can change is whether we let Mayfield make us do the dirty-work ourselves, or make it do the job on its own.

I'm sorry. I do think the DA is worth having. Lighting and hail, I joined because I think so. But...

Ach! I need more information. I need to know whether cooperating with this verdammt town actually ever does any good. Because if it doesn't -- if the sum total is always negative -- then I don't understand why we should play along.

I think the only thing we stand to gain are things that already belonged to us. It's not worth taking another life, and the town has already shown they can take away what they give back.

So many people probably just want to protect the people they care about, but the whole thing's really rotten, isn't it?

It's not anything that makes sense, so far, and until I know what the blue-fire it does and how it works, I'm going to try to leave room open for it to be a whole lot of things -- including a stupid mistake someone made that needs fixing.

It doesn't kill people for keeps. It doesn't rain, for heaven's sake. The drones are like programmmed Muses, and not very bright ones. It's more like an experiment than like a real place, and if what other people have discovered is correct -- that there was another town once, that there were people before us...

It's stupid, and strange, and crazy, but that's not always the same as evil. [Very dry] Believe me, I've been mistaken for "evil" myself, and half the time it was just because I was an idiot -- and because other people didn't know the details. I want to know the details.

Maybe we can find a way to fix this stupid, screwed up mess.

Or not. But I'd rather try than just give up and treat it like it can't be changed. If it can't be changed, we've already lost. It may not have won, but we've lost.

If you don't think that's evil, you're not helping.

I don't know what blue fire has to do with anything, but I know groups like the DA at least try to help. They want to fix this as much as anyone else and make sure we all make it.

Yes, and you might notice I joined the DA. That doesn't mean I have to stop thinking or asking questions -- and it definitely shouldn't mean that I have to simply interpret this place by your rules. That just a form of droning myself and saving Mayfield the trouble.

That's what bothers me about this entire stupid weekend: how much of this is a matter of people actually helping Mayfield? And why? Resistance can take a lot of forms, but most of them begin with saying "No. I won't do that."

Look... trust me, please. This town only wants bad things for us. If it doesn't get to you yet, take that chance and work with people like Hermoine.

Maybe one of us will figure out what it takes to beat this.
