[Tarvek gets to the Bakery first. He's so excited: he's going to get to meet a real, entirely sentient, self-willed Muse! Eeeeeeeee!]

[He orders a cup of coffee and waits, hoping Ilsa arrives first, so that Dakki Sigal is comfortable when she gets here.

[Dakki was the second to arrive, alas. Since it's good to be on time and it's better to be early, she's here a bit early.

The figure that comes through the door hasn't made any effort at all to blend into Mayfield. Her skin is pale purple, her hair is a shade darker, she has two faint seams upon the artificial skin of her face, and she's wearing close-fitting armor in silver and white and dark purple. Her expression as she scans the bakery interior is exceptionally realistic and human-like, but she moves with a grace that's just a bit alien.]

...hm.

[Having scanned the place and only seen obvious drones in the seats, her attention fixes on the one real-looking redhead.]

Ah, excuse me. You're Tarvek, right?

[That seemed to be fascination and wonder of an innocent enough sort, if she was reading his expression correctly. So she remained pleasant and smiling and polite, taking the offered chair.]

Thank you, er, Mr. Sturmvoraus. [Best to echo back the level of politeness being used!] It's good to be able to put a face to the name and the voice, too.

...ah, your friend? I see! Hello, Dr. Higa! Or... Ilsa? Or... [Her smile fades a bit.] I'm really just fine with everyone calling me Dakki. What would you both prefer? We don't need to be so formal, right?

And I wouldn't mind a cup of tea.

With the corned beef and the... oh! A reuben sandwich, right?

[She seems very pleased with herself. All of her research and diligent effort to learn about sandwiches was really paying off!]

Titles and rules and rankings don't mean much when you've been taken right out of the system they're made for. I sort of understand. What you do matters more, here.

[ Ilsa puts her hand briefly on his when Tarvek describes his prior life, and smiles gently on his statement about Mayfield. ]

There's a few here that have worse experiences to go back to, which is why the goal for so many is to get out, but not necessarily back.

I'd like to get back to my practice, but that's a minor aspect. We'll need spots for a number of refugees, when we get out.

[ The statement is quietly said with confidence. ]

Welcome back!

I've had the chance to eat lots of new things, too. And to taste them, while the town was keeping me human. I can't say I was crazy about sauerkraut on its own... but it combined with the other parts of the sandwich to become something more...

[It's all said with a sense of wonder. But she trails off, for the others have plenty of things to say, too. She takes it in, looking slowly between Tarvek and Ilsa.]

I hadn't thought much about people not wanting to go back to where they were from. But I can see where you're coming from. I do hope to get home, though. My world isn't perfect... but it's good. And when I left, we were at war with monstrosities from the darkest reaches of space. I couldn't leave my friends behind to fight alone.

[Dakki shrugs.] Many worlds do. Many worlds don't. I'm happy to hear about the peaceful ones. It gives me a bit of hope to know that mine might be like that, someday.

[But this was about business, really, wasn't it? And Tarvek had already struck on why she was here, without her having said so. Sharp guy. She sits back in her seat, a little less pleasantly relaxed.]

I've already been killed twice. Both times, I was lucky enough, if you can call it lucky, to be completely overwhelmed and taken out in one shot. I've had very minor injuries, but those were small enough that my auto-repair covered them. But for anything truly serious, I am worried that there's no one here capable of helping me.

[She folds her hands on the tabletop, casting a quick glance at Ilsa before putting her attention back on Tarvek.]

I have a nanoceran frame that supports pseudo-organic muscles and artificial organ structures. My core processor and personality functions are inorganic, but that's mostly a carry-over from my original design. It's supported by a more organic simulated brain. I eat and drink, as it supports my pseudo-organic components, but I have a small photon reactor in me to take care of the rest of my power needs.

[She pauses, wondering if he can still follow. Most people get all confused and wide-eyed when faced with so many technical terms.]

Tarvek - Dakki - Ilsa should work for now?

So, blending organic and mechanical has become possible in your world!

[ Ilsa has an interest in the assessment. ]

Do your auto-repair functions work on the organic portions as well?

[Both understood? Dakki gives Ilsa a smile. It's happiness that the empath can possibly feel, too. This "muse" has feelings and organic parts enough for that. Though she may feel odd and alien.]

They work on both! Although they're two separate processes that are linked under a single system.

...aah. [Back to Tarvek. Her mood gives a shift. Back to that slight tension from before.]

So you're some sort of reality-warper? With scientific grounding? If you've got something to hold you back from crossing any lines, then... maybe...

[She gives Ilsa an uncertain look. Is this true? Is he being honest? ...they had better not both be in conspiracy to do untoward things to her.]

I'm already willing, in the case that I'm too badly injured to naturally recover, let you try what you'd you like... I'll come back. Eventually. There comes a point of "broken" that this town registers as "dead", and sends me back to my bed in the morning. Just...how deep do you want to go, Tarvek? If you want to do anything than assess things on a surface level... if you want to stare at my insides, you're going to have to figure out how to access my maintenance mode. Cracking me open without that would be the same as operating on a living creature without anesthetic.

[ Ilsa covers Tarvek's hand with hers as he describes the way his world works, and the regrets he has attached to the memories. There's a lot there he is not telling them, but there is a deep-rooted grief underneath the regret that he rarely allows to surface.

Dakki's emotions may be alien, but they are there, which allows Ilsa to relax more in her presence.
]

We do want to work with you on the repair systems, if only to be able to assist your internal recovery systems. I'm a medical doctor as well, and though my field of specialization is psychiatry, I have also had training in trauma care.

There's also a little bit I can do in esoteric healing, but that's still severely limited. I do have an idea for someone to consult if we do need to anesthetize you.

Posting from my phone, eee...

[Dakki noted the hand-holding and the looks shared between the two, and suddenly realized just what kind of friends those two were. Aaah! Love! Another reason to not want to leave, no matter how dreadful this place was....

She settled again, satisfied with the answers so far.]

A physical and an attempt to interface with my systems... Sure. I can do that. And... Ah, you know Quinn, right? Invite Quinn. He's a friend.

[There. That was a perfectly good, perfectly safe initial negotiation.]

Quinn is who I had in mind to see if we needed to access your maintenance codes. Between the three of us, I think we may be able to help, if the regenerations are not quite right.

[ Ilsa smiles at the emotional responses. ]

This way, we can make sure we aren't going to cause damage, if you are injured beyond what your systems can handle.

Woohoo, it comes full circle!

Hey, I only heard you mention him once, quickly, before I hopped on the phone to talk to you. I wasn't completely sure.

[She's taking the correction with good humor. And ooh, taking her just-arrived cup of tea and measuring in some sugar, too.]

I'll come by, then. I do think I want to see what you all end up planning to do.

[Completely lacking in comprehension of what Ilsa is getting at or why Tarvek has jumped to such a conclusion, Dakki blinks and stares and lapses into awkward silence. She also has a sip of her tea.]

...well.

It's nice to... see a... happy couple in Mayfield.

I think I like the idea of an automated floor cleaner. Something for both tile and carpet? Variable modes? Something that really gets into those corners.

[ Ilsa nods, smiling at Dakki. ] Something that is not a sentient, but can maintain a specific part of the house. [ She turns to Tarvek, holding his hand. ] A variation of it might be for lawn care, but the drone boy in your house seems to have that covered.

Automated labor is very useful. I personally feel sort of bad, pushing too much of it off on the drones....

I think I'd rather mow the lawn than shovel the snow, though. I like it better when it's warm out. The summer was nice, when I first got here... even with Mayfield being... Mayfield.

[She takes another quick sip of tea.]

...swabbing decks?

[ Ilsa thinks that might have been an emotional spike indicating Not A Good Memory attached to that statement about swabbing decks. She projects a calming blanket around Tarvek as she angles the topic of conversation away from the subjects touching on the past. ]

I'm hoping that a formal herb garden is something Mayfield will let me plant in the front of the house. Decorative, useful and not as wasteful of resources as the lawn.
